“IT’S A CELEBRATION OF ALL THE MUSIC WE LOVE” | FATHERSON REVEAL NEW ALBUM AND TOUR DETAILS

“It’s like one of those rooms Joy Division would have played and hasn’t changed since those days,” say FATHERSON about Middlesbrough’s Westgarth Social Club.

After a handful of performances there, the Scottish rockers returned to the “wee gem hidden in nostalgia with a rich sense of community and a great atmosphere” in between festival appearances at this year’s TRNSMT and 2000 Trees. These kind of tours are often an opportunity to give a dress rehearsal to new tracks, and with new album SUM OF ALL YOUR PARTS coming in September, one would assume that this would be the case. However, the band are keeping their cards close to their chest, saying: “We have a couple of new ones we will be dropping in, but folk will have to wait until September to hear the rest.”

Creating said record has been somewhat of an enjoyable experience, from “just hanging out and making music with Claudius Mittendorfer who produced the album” to “living in Castleford for a month,” Fatherson have embraced change this time around. They explain that “it was nice to spend that amount of time in a new place plus the studio was amazing. It’s a celebration of all the music we love and love playing with each other.

“We went back to basics with it and it really worked. It sounds like us playing in a room together and less of a mad studio album. It is like the best parts of everything we’ve done so far.”

The plan for Fatherson for the rest of 2018 is “basically just stay on the road forever,” and you can’t blame them. “It’s very exciting to be back out playing shows because we’ve really missed it and it hasn’t even been a year. It’s great to be back in the thick of it and the shows have been much the same – it’s been a great return to getting back in front of people who care about this band.”

DIY venues like Westgarth Social Club will always welcome passionate bands like Fatherson, and bands like Fatherson will always welcome the venues, but “it only works if the people that come through the door have as much respect for the place as the bands do.

“There’s a time and a place for a polished empty room type venue, but it’s venues like Westgarth that are lifebloods of the area that make it so special.”
