THE PIGEON DETECTIVES were one of the most iconic bands of the ‘noughties.’ Their indie-rock anthems have been blasted from the speakers at the likes of Glastonbury, T in the Park and they have even been joined on stage by Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino to cover Jimi Hendrix.

Now, three years from their last LP, they are back with an upcoming new record and several tour dates. Loose Cardigan of Ideas quizzed front-man Matt Bowman about what is happening with the five-piece right now.

WHAT HAS THE REACTION BEEN LIKE SINCE YOU MENTIONED RELEASING NEW MUSIC?

“It has been overwhelmingly positive to be honest! We were a little taken aback by the amount of support we received when we announced the imminent release of a new track and also out 5th album.

“When you’re locked away writing a record you become immersed in a bubble and it becomes easy to convince yourself that everything has moved on in those two years and people just don’t care anymore.

“It appears we couldn’t have been more wrong though and the positivity from people with regards to our ‘come back’ has been humbling.”

THE UPCOMING TOUR IS SO INTIMATE – WHAT IS THE REASON FOR THIS?

“We wanted to rediscover the magic of playing live again. Live shows have always been where we’ve connected with fans and had shared experiences that people (including ourselves) can keep forever.

“It is a really exciting prospect for us to revisit some of these old venues in which we cut our teeth and learnt our trade as a band some 10 years ago. These are the shows where the unexpected happens, they’re a breeding ground for chaos and the thought of tearing it up in these tiny venues one last time was an opportunity we couldn’t turn down.

“I was surprised the whole tour sold out in a week, but that’s a testament to our loyal fan base!”

THE NEW ALBUM COMES OUT IN FEBRUARY – WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM IT?

“This album is reflective. It is a thank you and an apology. It is all the songs that we were never previously brave enough to write.

“It is the first time we have had enough self-belief to say ‘we hope you like the record, really we truly truly hope you like it, but if you don’t – who cares, we love it.'”

HAVE ANY BANDS PARTICULARLY INFLUENCED THE NEW RECORD?

“We do not really sit down and say ‘I’ve been listening to THIS band and THIS is how we should sound”. But as humans we can’t help but be influenced and driven by the things around us that excite or inspire us, so undoubtedly the answer would be yes (even if I can’t name the bands specifically).

“Personally I have been revisiting all my old favourite albums like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Vines, but then again that couldn’t be further away from the sound of the new record, so maybe not?!

“That was quite a conflicting answer! Sorry about that!”

CAN WE EXPECT A ‘GREATEST HITS‘ KIND OF SET FROM THE PIGEON DETECTIVES?

“We are turning up to these small venues to take names! It i s going to be all the ‘hits’ with a couple of new ones sandwiched in there for people to take a breather and enjoy.”

THE TOUR FINISHES IN STOCKTON-ON-TEES’ KU BAR – DO YOU HAVE ANY FOND MEMORIES OF PLAYING THE NORTH EAST?

“It wouldn’t feel like a tour without us playing the North East. It Is a great part of the world and we always have special gigs there.

“Stockton in particular has been the scene of some absolute chaos in the past. The KU Bar as venue lends itself to a real rock and roll shin dig! The crowd are within touching/smelling/spitting distance and the low ceiling just creates a cauldron of energy!

“I love playing gigs there and it will be a perfect sweat soaked way to draw this tour to an end.”

CAN WE BE HOPEFUL OF MORE TOURS AFTER THIS ONE?

“We already have the next tour planned, all the venues are booked and it is ready to go! We are going to get this tour dealt with and then boom, here is the next one – enjoy!”
