AMERCIAN FOOTBALL – 17 years over-due

AMERICAN FOOTBALL have announced their second album – the first since 1999. Ahead of the October release, the Illinois band have teased fans by releasing two tracks from American Football ii.

The second instalment of new music is Give Me The Gun. Echoing the signature American Football sound that has mesmerised fans for nearly two decades. However, instead of playing it safe and fully replicating the 1999 sound, Mike Kinsella and co. have subtly wandering into a jaunty drum-led track.

Lasting just under three-and-a-half minutes, Give Me The Gun offers everything that American Football should; i) gristly Kinsella vocals, ii) toe-tapping drums, and iii) minimum lyrics. The four-piece work around Kinsella’s “Give Me The Gun” pleas, creating blissful, ambient instrumentation, before fading into a cascading, eerie climax.

Hopefully the track is surrounded by similar creations, as we heard in I’ve Been Lost For So Long – the first release for 17 years – we can be assured that the math-rock giants have not  strayed into musical wilderness, but instead stuck close to their symbolic, ’emo’ roots.

American Football is out 21st October and available to pre-order here: American Football ii
