THE JOY FORMIDABLE are one of the most underrated British bands of the past few years.

They released their third and latest studio album Hitch on March 25th and are currently on tour to promote it.

I spoke to front-woman Rhiannon ‘Bitzy’ Bryan about all live albums, nights out and the future.

Before the UK tour you headed out to the USA for a few shows – how was was that?

“We are really enjoying being back on the road. It has been a whirlwind start to the year. UK, South America and USA. We have just arrived back in Britain (when the interview took place) but we are feeling great – bit jetlagged but excited to be playing live again!”

There are 12 UK dates on this tour – where are you most excited to be playing?

“We are looking forward to it all. It will be great to see Leeds and Norwich again, lots of fun memories from those cities and of course our ‘hometown’ show in Wrexham for Focus Wales. That [Focus Wales] is a great festival – we are so glad to see it thriving!”

You played Newcastle’s Think Tank? on Saturday – do you have any other memories of the city?

“I have a hazy one of Matt dancing in a cage after our last show up there! We have had some good nights out in Newcastle. If the kittiwakes are in town I’ll be paying them a visit by the quayside.”

The Joy Formidable now have three albums including latest ‘Hitch’ – what has the setlist been like?

“We will definitely be playing tracks off the new record, but also material from The Big Roar, Wolfs Law and a few things in between.”

Are there any favourites of your own that will definitely make the setlist?

“I have really been enjoying playing The Brook acoustically. It is different to the album version, but lots of space for the vocal and melody. I still get a kick out of playing The Greatest Light Is the Greatest Shade – I can’t imagine a set without it.”

What is the plan post-tour?

“We are not sure when it is going to end to be honest. We wrap up in the UK in two weeks and go straight into festival season and the second leg of our USA/Canada tour. We do want to record a live album at some point, so we will be scheduling that soon!”

This has been an absolute pleasure – any final words?

“Thank you for the questions! And thanks for a great show in Newcastle!”
