ARCTIC MONKEYS are the band of our generation. Even ten years since their debut album was released, they continue to be played in pubs and clubs across the land. How many bands nowadays try to replicate Arctic Monkeys’ sound? Loads.
I have narrowed my favourites down to just FIVE – a very difficult process. Find the list below.
5 – FIRESIDE (AM)
When I first listened to AM, I was somewhat underwhelmed. Finally – Arctic Monkeys had released a fifth album, but I did not enjoy it. However, Fireside stuck out for me and I have loved it ever since. After giving the album a few listens I fell in love with AM in full. A class record that cemented its place in history as Arctic Monkeys’ 5th number one album.
4 – LEAVE BEFORE THE LIGHTS COME ON (SINGLE)
An older track by Arctic Monkeys, but a brilliant one nonetheless. Full of raw, gritty northern talent – Leave Before The Lights Come On is what the band were all about when they first burst onto the scene. Sadly not playing it anymore, it will always have a special place in my life.
3 – WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN (WPSIATWIN)
The song that got me into Arctic Monkeys. After seeing the video on NME TV (going back a few years there..) I was gripped. Who are this band? The easiest search ever and I found out that it was Arctic Monkeys. A firm favourite ever since and when they dropped it at Leeds Festival 2014 I was gobsmacked. Excellent track.
2 – LOVE IS A LASERQUEST (SUCK IT AND SEE)
A love song by the Sheffield-quartet. Alex Turner crooning through a Suck It And See masterpiece, this is romance. I love everything about the song – watch/listen to the KEXP version of it and fall in love. I hope one day when The Last Shadow Puppets disappear again that Turner does solo gigs and plays this. Beautiful.
1 – BLACK TREACLE (SUCK IT AND SEE)
I do not even know what it is about this track that I love so much. Helders escaping prison? The USA rock-n-roll vibe? The Sheffield twang blended into Turner’s new Americanised voice? Who knows, whatever it is gets right to me. Slick guitars, rip-roaring drums and deep bass all present, Black Treacle will always top my list of favourite Arctic Monkeys.
